Demetra Thomas is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S) in the State of Louisiana, a National Certified Counselor (NCC), and a Registered Play Therapist (RPT). Demetra earned her Master of Education degree in Human Services and Counselor Education from the University of New Orleans. She has worked in the mental health field for eighteen years in the state of Louisiana. She has a passion and expertise for working with children using play therapy to help children prevent and or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development. She works with couples to identify problems and solutions in their relationships to achieve a desired and/or favorable outcome. She utilizes modalities to promote and integrate mindfulness and holistic wellness. She works with a wide range of issues, including behavioral issues, attention deficit (ADHD) disorders, depression, anger management, anxiety, other mental health disorders, unresolved emotional issues, self-esteem/self-empowerment, relationship/family concerns, individual counseling for personal and emotional growth, creating more meaning and purpose, in one’s life/living a more fulfilled life, and multiple other issues.
I utilize mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral or evidenced-based approaches in most cases in which you and I will work together to identify consistent patterns that lead to difficult thoughts or choices that you are experiencing in life. I also use different techniques and/or modalities as it pertains to the nature of our session. I believe that therapy involves collaboration between counselor and client. I will help you identify your strengths and develop effective solutions to the issues, patterns, thoughts, and actions you are experiencing in your life. I encourage you to begin a growth-promoting journey through therapy. In the session, we will work effectively to discover solutions to your challenges in order to attain your goals in the shortest time possible. I like to use humor regularly in my sessions and I take every possible measure to ensure that my office is safe for you to laugh, cry or express anger as needed freely. I use play therapy for adults and children in which we use play, art, interactions, activities, games, books, to help them express their needs to develop a healthy mental “wellbeing.” I see counseling as a process in which I and my clients will build a trusting relationship in a non-judgmental space that will allow us to work together, explore and process present and past situations. All techniques used within the therapeutic relationship will help you work through and move beyond painful emotional blocks and is an ongoing process.
